As homeowner design preferences evolve, so do the trends within the windows and doors industry. Each year brings new innovations, changing aesthetics, and advancements in technology that influence what consumers look for in their homes.
We’ve identified current windows and doors trends by analysing frequent customer inquiries and observing recurring themes in our projects. Here’s what we’ve found:
Heritage windows and doors
The number of customers enquiring about heritage windows and doors with slim lines has seen a surge, and isn’t showing signs of slowing down. Homeowners are also choosing slim glazing bars as a more affordable option to achieve the classic heritage and crittall window style.
What are heritage doors and windows?
Heritage windows and doors are a classic yet modern style that mimics the look of original steel-framed windows and doors with thin sightlines and industrial grid designs
Heritage doors, often known as ‘Crittall doors’ or ‘Crittall-style doors’, date back to the 19th century. The design was pioneered by Francis Henry Crittall, a prominent figure in the production of narrow-sightline steel windows and doors. These doors also saw a surge in popularity during the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 1930s.
Originally popular during the Industrial Revolution to bring more natural light into expanding factories, heritage doors were crafted from steel. Today, they’re made from lightweight aluminium, a more readily available material that offers much better thermal efficiency and durability.
This type of design is particularly popular among homeowners seeking to create a contemporary or Scandinavian aesthetic for their property.
According to Andrew Boast, property expert at SAM Conveyancing, the heritage-style window could add anywhere from 2% to 5% to a property’s market value, depending on the location, property type, and the quality of the installation. He adds: “Period homes benefit the most, as buyers seek architectural authenticity. Combine heritage aesthetics with modern performance, such as double or triple glazing, and the value uplift could reach up to 10%.”
Sliding and bi-fold doors
Sliding doors with slim interlocks and flush floor finishes are consistently popular, as are bi-folding doors. At Clearview, we manufacture a range of aluminium sliding and bi-folding doors, offering customers the perfect alternative to patio or French doors.
What is the difference between a sliding door and a bi-folding door?
The main difference between a sliding door and a bi-folding door is their operation. Sliding doors glide open along a track, revealing large, uninterrupted glass panels, while bi-folding doors consist of multiple panels that fold like an accordion to create a wide, full opening to the outside.
Bi-fold doors offer a complete, seamless opening but require more space for the folded panels, whereas sliding doors are ideal for maximising uninterrupted views and are better suited for space-constrained areas.
These types of doors could add 7–10% to the final sales price, according to Andrew.
Classic colours are making a comeback
Popular window and door colours change frequently, and right now, the most popular ones are being superseded by classic black and off-black tones, and homeowners are also increasingly choosing autumnal shades, including various browns, brown-greys, and muted greens like sage and chartwell.
While the colour of window frames and doors might not directly affect sales value, curb appeal is a crucial factor. Choosing unconventional colours could deter potential buyers if you plan to sell your home. It’s essential to consider how easily new homeowners could change the colour. If a full replacement is the only option, this could significantly influence their decision to make an offer.
Aluminium over outdated materials
At Clearview, we advise choosing aluminium for windows and doors. Many of our projects involve replacing older timber, UPVC, and composite doors with aluminium, highlighting its superior durability. From a value perspective, aluminium products enhance a property’s appeal to potential buyers, who recognise the benefit of long-lasting, high-quality window and door upgrades.
The benefits of aluminium windows and doors include:
- Durability and longevity: Aluminium is a corrosion-resistant material, meaning it will have a long life span.
- Low maintenance: Unlike other materials, aluminium windows and doors require minimal upkeep.
- Energy efficiency: Aluminium frames incorporate thermal breaks, which insulate your home by preventing heat from escaping or entering, leading to lower energy bills and greater comfort.
- Design versatility: Aluminium allows for slim sightlines, which means larger glass panes can be used, maximising natural light and offering a versatile aesthetic for both contemporary and traditional homes.
- Sound insulation: The combination of aluminium frames and double or triple glazing provides good sound insulation.
Andrew continues: “Upgrading to aluminium windows and doors can increase a home’s value by around 3% to 7%, particularly in design-led homes or modern renovations where clean lines and minimalism are the favoured aesthetic.”
Energy-efficient windows and doors
Homeowners are increasingly seeking energy-efficient windows and doors, such as those that offer triple glazing. These features not only help maintain comfortable indoor temperatures, retaining heat in colder weather and keeping homes cool in warmer conditions, but also contribute to reduced energy costs. Andrew says that this can increase a home’s value by up to 10%.
Is triple glazing energy efficient?
Triple glazing is more energy efficient than double glazing because the addition of a third pane of glass and another insulating gas layer creates a better thermal barrier, reducing heat loss, improving comfort, and leading to lower energy bills. While it is more expensive initially, triple glazing is considered a worthwhile investment for maximum insulation, especially in colder climates or areas with noise pollution, offering superior performance compared to standard double-glazed windows.
