We are thrilled to share that a selection of our doors and windows were featured in the latest episode of Channel 4’s Grand Designs, a series which highlights some of Britain’s most ambitious self-building projects, hosted by Kevin McCloud
Project Background
In the latest instalment of the BAFTA-winning series, couple Kara and Jonny set out to build a wheelchair-accessible home in the Pennines in West Yorkshire.
Whilst on holiday in 2019, Kara was unexpectedly diagnosed with Neuromyelitis Optica, a rare autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system. Unfortunately, this meant she would no longer be able to walk, and her home, a small converted garage, was unsuitable for her.
In the picturesque backdrop of West Yorkshire, Kara and Jonny had hopes of creating a wheelchair-accessible home that would allow the whole family to enjoy life comfortably.
We were first approached directly by the customer; however, at the time of the initial enquiry, we were unaware that this project would be featured on Grand Designs.
A home transformed: Accessible windows and doors
For this home to be wheelchair accessible for Kara, we needed to supply doors and windows, allowing for an enjoyable living experience. We provided Aluk tilt & turn windows as well as side hung windows, meaning the family can make the most of the beautiful surrounding scenery.
The addition of easy-to-use sliding doors to the property allows for a seamless transition from the outside to the inside of the home. High-performance aluminium entrance doors offered this project a contemporary look while delivering excellent thermal performance. Accompanied by pole handles, these doors place accessible home design at the forefront of this project.
Prioritising energy efficiency
We supported the home’s energy efficiency by including flat roof lights. These lights provide significantly more natural light compared to standard windows, reducing the use of artificial lighting and, therefore, lowering energy costs.
