Find out more about the benefits and applications of Heritage doors and windows for your home below.

The history of Heritage doors and windows

Heritage doors have a history spanning back to the 19th century. Originally manufactured during the Industrial Revolution to allow more natural daylight into growing factories, Heritage doors feature slim frames with large glass panes arranged in a grid formation.

Sometimes referred to as ‘Crittall doors’ or ‘Crittall-style doors’, the design was created by Francis Henry Crittall in 1849. Nowadays, Heritage design can be seen widely used within homes and commercial buildings, offering an aesthetically pleasing and sleek design that allows natural light to flow through.

The benefits of Heritage doors and windows

Our Clearview Heritage doors bring a range of benefits to your home, including enhanced insulation, durability and aesthetic benefits compared to traditional glass doors.

Enhanced insulation

Heritage windows and doors incorporate innovative polyamide thermal break technology to create a barrier between cold and warm air. This increases the “U Value” of the product, which measures heat loss or gain between walls and can contribute towards lower energy bills.

Our Clearview Heritage doors and windows are manufactured with energy-saving glass as standard, which works to reduce thermal transfer, helping to keep rooms warmer in winter and cooler in summer. We can also fit alternative specialist glass options such as Low-E, argon-filled, or solar-control glass based on your unique requirements.

Durability and safety

We manufacture our Heritage range with aluminium, a less expensive option than steel doors and windows but offering excellent durability. When paired with toughened  double-glazed units , aluminium windows or doors are made to last as they are less susceptible to damage.

Like all of our doors, Clearview Heritage doors are manufactured to PAS 24 security standards. The PAS 24 standard ensures that the door offers suitable protection for domestic properties and helps to keep residents safe against break-ins and thefts. For example, we manufacture all doors with a multi-point hook locking system as standard.

Fitting with planning guidelines and historical design

Maintaining the existing design elements and character for listed buildings or properties within conservation areas is essential. Our Heritage doors and windows offer a duplication of traditional Heritage or Crittall doors with safety and energy-saving features for the modern home.

We specialise in working with bespoke measurements or sizes to match the architectural integrity of listed buildings. We can match the original shape or size of the property’s original glass panels or create accurate Heritage Bay windows or arched windows and doors.

Applications of Heritage doors

Heritage doors, also known as Crittall doors, are most commonly installed in houses where people are looking for a traditional look. They are well suited to both modern and traditional properties.

Heritage doors can be manufactured into the following types of doors:

Heritage bifold doors and Heritage sliding doors are popular at the back of a property to help create an indoor-outdoor feel, especially in summer months when homeowners tend to entertain outdoors.

This Heritage bi-folding doors is 3600mm wide x 2100mm high, with four main panels in total.

At Clearview, we can also add sidelights to your Heritage door, which are slim glass and aluminium panels extending out on both or one side. These are suitable for mimicking particular historical doors or simply increasing the width of the door, for example, at the main entryways in the home.

We also offer Heritage doors with sash sizes up to 900 x 2100mm.

Applications of Heritage windows

Heritage windows can be manufactured in several different shapes and sizes, including curved panels to suit existing archways. They are most commonly used in the following areas of the home:

  • Main external windows throughout the home
  • Arched windows in single archways or throughout the exterior
  • Internal feature walls with Heritage windows
  • Hinged windows in kitchens and bathroom

Heritage aluminium windows are an excellent choice for both large and small spaces, as the slim frame and minimalist design help to maximise natural light. The aluminium frame is also great for external applications as the material is lightweight, which makes it easy to operate while offering great structural integrity.

How are Heritage doors and windows made?

The process of manufacturing Heritage doors and windows begins once we have established the exact measurements and designs required by our customer.  The overall look will be further determined by establishing the desired colour (typically black or white) and if sidelights are required.

Heritage-style windows and doors are designed using bespoke aluminium frames cut (mitred) on a double-head saw in our manufacturing facility, then machined and prepared on a CNC  router. We use a CNC machine to achieve precision detailing and ensure our Heritage products fit securely at installation.

We fit the transoms (horizontal rails) within the frames and position these based on the design requirements. The Heritage doors and windows are then meticulously quality tested.
